Grant awarded to carry out pilot study investigating the coagulation system in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis

We have recently been awarded a grant from the St George's Hospital Trustees to investigate the coagulation system in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis. The pilot study will be a collaboration between our group and Dr Stefano Giuliani, a consultant pediatrician working at St George's.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common and potentially deadly intestinal disease that affects newborn infants. The overall incidence of NEC in premature babies weighing less than 1500 g is 7%, with a mortality rate up to 40% in the advanced stages of the disease. There is a well-known relationship between severe inflammation and consumptive coagulopathy but currently no data on the coagulation system in neonates affected by NEC. We hope that greater knowledge of the coagulation and anticoagulation systems in NEC will give insight and possible new treatments for this common and devastating neonatal disease.
